SCHOOL HANDBOOK
Beth Derech School of Discipleship Statement of Purpose
Creating an educational system based on Jesus' discipleship method involves a relational and transformative approach to learning. Central to this concept is the idea of guiding students through personal mentorship and modeling, much like Jesus did with His disciples. This approach emphasizes building meaningful relationships, imparting wisdom through example, and encouraging growth through dialogue and reflection. By focusing on a personal connection, experiential learning, and spiritual development, such a system fosters not only academic excellence but also deepens students' faith and character. The goal is to nurture learners who are not only knowledgeable but also equipped to live out their faith with integrity and compassion, following in the footsteps of Christ.
Vision:
At Beth Derech School of Discipleship, we envision a transformative educational journey that forms the hearts, imaginations, and lives of students in alignment with the Kingdom of God. Through holistic formation, embodied learning, and confirming community models, we cultivate students who live out a holy incarnational faith that manifests Kingdom values in their communities and the world.
Mission:
The mission of Beth Derech School of Discipleship is to equip students with the highest quality Christian education for aligning hearts, imaginations, and lives with the Kingdom of God.
Core Values:
Christlikeness: A commitment to forming the faith of students through addressing their cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and physical development. Holiness is our priority.
Excellence in Education: It isn’t about how many students are enrolled in the school but about the quality of those students. Quality above quantity must be our core value when it comes to all educational decisions.
Relationships/ Community: Education flourishes in deeply connected social environments. We need to create and foster a culture of strong social bonds crucial to authentic discipleship.
Service: Experiential knowledge must accompany cognitive knowledge. Engagement with the surrounding community through acts of compassion and other acts of service is essential to a healthy Christian school.
Worthy of Imitation: All staff and teachers are to live and work in a way that should be modeled and imitated by students. “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1).
Statement of Faith
The 18 points of the Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of the saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Educational Philosophy
Beth Derech School of Discipleship emphasizes a holistic approach to education that integrates intellectual, moral, and spiritual formation. Central to this philosophy is the concept that education is not merely about imparting information but about shaping the desires and imaginations of students toward a vision of the Kingdom of God. According to our philosophy, education should be immersive and formative, engaging students' hearts and habits as much as their minds.
Key elements of this philosophy include:
1. Formative Education: Education should be seen as a process of forming students' identities and desires, aligning them with the values of the Kingdom of God. This involves nurturing virtues such as love, justice, and humility, and fostering a deep understanding of Christian faith as a way of life.
2. Liturgical Learning: Learning environments should reflect the rhythms and practices of Christian worship and community life. This means integrating spiritual disciplines, such as prayer and reflection, into the daily routine of education, thereby shaping students' imaginations and values in alignment with their faith.
3. Embodied Learning: Education should engage students holistically, addressing their cognitive, emotional, and physical dimensions. Learning is not just an intellectual exercise but an embodied experience that involves practices, habits, and rituals that shape character and worldview.
4. Cultural Engagement: Beth Derech's approach encourages students to engage critically with culture through a Christian lens, understanding and transforming cultural narratives in light of the Gospel. This means fostering a critical awareness of cultural influences and encouraging students to contribute positively to their communities.
5. Community and Relationships: Central to Beth Derech’s philosophy is the idea that education happens within a community where relationships are key to growth. Students learn not only from teachers but also through interactions with peers, mentors, and the broader community, all within a context that reflects Christian values.
In summary, an educational philosophy based on Beth Derech's approach focuses on shaping students' desires and imaginations through a holistic, immersive, and community-centered educational experience. It integrates intellectual learning with spiritual and moral formation, encouraging students to live out their faith actively in all areas of life.

Statement on Marriage and Sexuality
As a classical Christian school, we affirm that:
Marriage is a sacred covenant ordained by God, designed to be a lifelong union between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4–6).
Sexual intimacy is a good gift from God to be enjoyed only within the covenant of marriage (Hebrews 13:4).
God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders reflect the image and nature of God (Genesis 1:27).
Any form of sexual immorality (including adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, and use of pornography) is contrary to God’s design (1 Corinthians 6:9–10; Romans 1:26–27).
We believe that all people are created in God’s image and thus are worthy of love, dignity, and respect. Therefore, we are committed to speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and upholding biblical standards while showing compassion to all.
This statement is foundational to our community life, hiring practices, curriculum, and expectations for student behavior.

Academic Standards
We have high academic standards here and the educational workload is significantly difficult. More than this, Beth Derech believes that liturgical learning is crucial to a student’s education because it integrates spiritual practices into the fabric of daily life, shaping students' desires and imaginations in alignment with Christian values. By embedding liturgical elements—such as prayer, worship, and ritual—into the educational environment, students are immersed in practices that form their character and worldview. This approach not only deepens their understanding of faith but also cultivates habits and dispositions that align with the Kingdom of God, fostering a holistic formation that engages both the intellect and the heart. Through liturgical learning, education becomes a transformative process that shapes students into individuals who live out their faith authentically and meaningfully.
Academic Status
Good Academic Standing: This applies to students who are earning 80% or higher in each of their classes.

Academic Failure: This applies to students who are earning 69% or below in a class. The student will have two weeks to bring their percentage up to 75% or higher.
Appearance and Dress Code - Grades K-12
The following are basic guidelines for our dress code:
All students are encouraged to dress up on Wednesdays for chapel
Skirts must come to 2 inches above the top of the knee
No tights or Leggings are worn as “pants”
All students’ shirts must completely cover the midriff, even when arms are raised
No low-cut necklines, shirts unbuttoned to the extreme, sleeveless garments, tanks, or open-shouldered shirts
No hole-ridden, ripped, or “fashion-frayed” clothing
No dirty, unkempt, or inside-out clothing
No skin-tight clothing
All shorts are to be no shorter than 4 inches above the knee
Pants and shorts must be worn at the waist
No “wheelies” or other roller-skate-type shoes because of the risk of injury
Keep makeup modest for girls, but no makeup on boys
Students are expected to dress according to our dress code from the time they arrive on the school premises until they leave for the day.
Attendance
At 7:30 a.m., staff will supervise student arrivals. All students are to be at the morning meeting at 8:00 a.m. They will be counted as tardy if they are not at the morning meeting at 8:05 a.m. School dismisses at 3:30 p.m. Pick up students no earlier than 3:15 p.m. and no later than 3:40 p.m. Parents who are repeatedly late in picking up their children may incur a fee. This is an educational institution and not a childcare center.
SNOW DAYS: Snow days will be decided usually by the closing of Lakewood Public Schools. The Headmaster will notify families of the school closing to confirm that Beth Derech is indeed closed. However, on occasion, Lakewood Public School may close for reasons that do not fit the school’s situation (for example: bus issues). In these cases, Beth Derech may still be open.
Regular attendance is of extreme importance for the success of the student in school. If a student will be absent or tardy for any reason, make sure you notify your student’s teacher. This doesn’t mean the absence will be excused. Absences are excused for the following reasons only:
The student is legitimately ill
The student has a doctor/ dentist appointment that could not be scheduled after school hours.
The student has a death in his immediate family.
Absence prearranged by family and school for ministry reasons
The maximum number of days a student may be absent in a semester without losing credit are 10 days.
Family Vacations: Efforts should be made to avoid vacations that require taking students out of school. Parents who have no alternatives but to take a student out of school must make arrangements with the student’s teacher at least two weeks prior to the vacation.
Bullying, Threats, Intimidation, and Weapons Policy
We have a ZERO tolerance for any physical behavior that is threatening, intimidating, bullying, or sexually harassing. If a student is experiencing any of these actions, they should IMMEDIATELY seek a teacher or administrator. The contacted staff will immediately initiate action concerning the threat. The accused student will immediately be removed pending investigation.
Beth Derech School will apply the following responses to threats (verbal, graphic, digital, or written - at or outside of the school). The school will also apply the following responses to the possession of a weapon, explosive, incendiary, or dangerous item on school property:
Beth Derech’s top priority is the protection and safety of all of its students. Therefore, if a student brings a weapon to school, the school will suspend the student pending an investigation to determine if the student will be permanently expelled.
Beth Derech will report threats to the student’s parents and the authorities. Parents are advised that the school will contact the local police or appropriate authorities.
Possession includes, but is not limited to, having a weapon in a locker, backpack, purse, bicycle, or vehicle. If the school decides that the threat of violence is credible, the Headmaster will report the threat to the student or staff that is being threatened. Students making such threats will not be suspended for a period of time deemed sufficient for correction to have occurred.
Students making credible threats will be expelled. The term “credible” means a reasonable belief or suspicion, determined by the sole discretion of the school Headmaster, that the threat had a reasonable chance of being carried out.
In the cases where the Headmaster deems the threat not credible, the Headmaster may still suspend the student. There will be a meeting with the parents to inform them of the situation. These include cases in which the student claims, “just joking.” You will be held to account for your words as well as your deeds.
The Headmaster will notify the threatened parties and their parents, even if the threat is not deemed credible.

Curriculum
The teachers at Beth Derech School of Discipleship focus on accomplishing the following:
Bringing all knowledge into submission to Christ
Educate and disciple students in the Christian Way as laid out in Matthew chapters 5-7.
As people of the Book, we emphasize the study of language, words, and grammar.
Correction & Reprove
Our discipline policy is guided by a desire to follow a Biblical philosophy of discipline. The type and amount of discipline will be determined by the teachers and, if necessary, by the Headmaster. The main source of the discipline model used comes from Matthew 18. The vast majority of all problems should be handled at the classroom level with the student’s teacher. If the Headmaster is involved, the student is in a place of great concern and may be on the path to suspension and expulsion.
To not have an environment that is orderly and peaceful, seriously hinders the learning of the student, causing the disruptions as well as all the other students in the classroom. Beth Derech School is a privilege to attend, not a right. The school doesn’t have to make it work.
At the discretion of the teacher, these behaviors may result in a visit to the Headmaster:
Blatant Disrespect shown to the teacher
Dishonesty in any situation at school, including lying, cheating, and theft/ stealing.
Rebellion, i.e., outright disobedience in response to instructions.
Fighting, i.e., physically acting out in anger with the intention to harm the other student.
Obscene language, including blaspheme against the Trinity.
The Headmaster may choose to proceed at their discretion with the following courses of action:
The first two times a student is sent to the Headmaster for discipline, the student’s parents will be contacted and given the details of the situation that occurred.
The third visit to the Headmaster will be followed by a meeting with the parents and Headmaster and a two-day suspension for the student.
The fourth visit to the Headmaster will be followed by a meeting with the parents and Headmaster and a dismissal from school.
*SERIOUS MISCONDUCT MAY LEAD TO IMMEDIATE EXPULSION FROM SCHOOL*
Dismissal/ Expulsion
All suspensions and Expulsions are at the discretion of the Headmaster. Students can be suspended and expelled for situations that are disgraceful to the School whether they occur on campus or not, doesn’t matter.
Re-admittance: The expelled student does have a possibility of coming back per Matthew 18. However, it is by no means guaranteed. The Headmaster, teachers, and school council will meet to discuss and decide if a student, once expelled, would be allowed to return.
Electronic Devices
All cell phones are to be turned off and handed to the office upon entering the building. They can be turned on at 3:15 p.m. Any phone calls/ texts/ emails to parents/ guardians must be made through your student's teacher.
Students may not use any electronic device at school that their teacher has not approved first. If a student has any questions about whether an activity is permitted, they should ask their teacher.
School computers as an educational resource will be used by the students. This will be done with teacher supervision. However, accidental access to inappropriate or unchristian material may happen even with supervision. If this occurs, the teacher will step in and report the problem to our technology staff.
Field Trips
Beth Derech offers field trips throughout the year that reinforce the school’s values and educational goals:
1. Educational Enrichment: Field trips provide opportunities for hands-on learning and real-world application of classroom concepts. Students can visit museums, historical sites, science centers, and other places relevant to their studies, which enhances their understanding of various subjects.
2. Spiritual Growth: Conservative Christian schools often integrate faith-based teachings into all aspects of education, including field trips. Visits to places of historical or spiritual significance to Christianity (such as churches, religious landmarks, or missions) can deepen students' faith and understanding of their religious heritage.
3. Cultural and Moral Education: Field trips can be used to expose students to cultural diversity while reinforcing conservative Christian values. Visiting places that exemplify positive moral values or historical figures who upheld Christian principles can serve as educational examples.
4. Community Building: Field trips foster a sense of community among students and staff. They provide opportunities for students to bond outside the classroom, strengthening friendships and promoting a supportive environment.
5. Teaching Responsibility and Behavior: Field trips offer chances to teach students proper behavior in public settings and responsibility for their actions outside of school grounds. This reinforces the school's expectations of conduct in various environments.
6. Broadening Perspectives: Visiting different places and experiencing different cultures can help students develop empathy, understanding, and tolerance towards others, while still maintaining conservative Christian values.
7. Fun and Engagement: Field trips provide a break from regular classroom routines, making learning more enjoyable and memorable for students. It can motivate them to stay engaged in their studies.
In order to make field trips possible, we must rely on at times, volunteers among the parents to help us with transportation and supervision of the students. Parents will always receive a Field Trip Permission slip from their child’s teacher before the trip, notifying them of all the trip details. All teachers and parents volunteering their vehicles for transportation must complete a Volunteer Participation Form.
